2008 LGGMclub Research & Presentation Project
Guffey GeoStudy
Park County, Colorado
When a local rock hound from the Guffey community located in the historic Micanite Mining District of southern Park County, Colorado asked retired Emporia State University Professor Steven Wade Veatch about making a small Presentation to the local residents about the Geology of the Area, the birth of a new Club Project opportunity presented itself.
Steve generously agreed and after some preliminary research,
discovered very little has been written on the area. He presented the
topic to the Board & Members of the Lake George Gem & Mineral
Club, of which he is a member. The fact that there was so very little
published had made this a perfect chance to not only make a
presentation of the Amazing Story of Guffey! with a rich history of Geology,
but to in fact bring it to the attention of other interested parties on
all levels. (Click on the above link to View the Original Announcement to present the study to the Guffey Community)
The LGGMclub agreed with excitement, bringing together many talents & experience from the various geologists, educators, hobbyists that makes up the club. We decided to do the research well enough, including field trips, oral interviews, take pictures and prepare writing for the Guffey residents -and- in such a manner to be worthy of presentation for the The Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society (CSMS), The 41-st Annual Denver Gem & Mineral Show, and The 29-th Annual New Mexico Mineral Symposium on the 9-th of November, as well as our very own LGGMclub this Winter when we can't get out for field trips. Click here for the upcoming Feb. 14th Announcement Schedule of the presentation at the next Club Meeting!
The project was all we could hope for in learning about the heritage, studying the geology, including exposing a mineral that the State records did not show was there. We teamed up and came together, brain storming, digging up information, for what hopefully is the first of many Club Research & Presentation Projects to come!
Our presentation was covered by local correspondent Flip Boettcher of The Flume (a local newspaper serving Park County since 1879). You can click here to view a copyrighted copy of the story that appeared in the October 31, 2008 edition.
